Leningrad Military District

Commander --- BOBRYSHEV, Valentin, Gen (KZ 2 June 00; Agentstvo voyennykh novostey, 21 Aug 02). Promoted to General (Interfax, 22 Feb 03).

  • [Bobryshev was born in the Stavropol territory on March 5, 1945. He graduated from the Leningrad higher combined-arms command school in 1996, Frunze Military Academy in 1977 and General Staff Academy in 1983. He served in the Leningrad military district and Trans-Polar region holding various posts from platoon commander to battalion commander. After graduating from the Frunze Military Academy Bobryshev led a regiment in the Far East and was chief-of-staff of a division.   He commanded a division in the Southern troops group after graduating from the General Staff Academy. Later Bobryshev served as first deputy commander of the 14th army in Tiraspol, chief-of-staff and commander of the 1st army in the Kyiv military district and then chief- of-staff of the Baltic military district and Northwestern troops group. He led the Collective Peacekeeping Forces in Tajikistan and was appointed Leningrad military district chief-of-staff in 1995. Bobryshev became the district's commander in March 1997. Air Defense Troops

Commander --- SOLOMENTSEV, Andrey, Col (Agentstvo Voyennykh Novostey, 25 Feb 03).

  • Solomentsev was born in the Dzhambul region of Kazakhstan on August 20, 1956. He graduated from the Poltava higher air defense missile command college in 1977, Air Defense Academy of the Land Forces in 1998, and General Staff Academy in 2000.   Solomentsev served in the Russian troops group in Germany, Central Asian and Leningrad military districts. He has held main command and staff posts in air defense units of the Land Forces and received many awards of the state and Defense Ministry.  Prior to his current appointment, Solomentsev was chief-of-staff and first deputy commander of the Leningrad district's air defense troops.
