Chernomordin
was born in the town of Skadovsk in Ukraine's Kherson
region in 1953. He graduated from the Kharkov Higher Tank Command College in 1975, Ordnance Troops Academy in 1984 and General Staff Academy in 1996. Prior to
his current post he was deputy chief-of-staff of Russia's Ural military district. He was appointed commander
of the Collective Quick Response Forces at a Collective Security Council
session in Yerevan last week (Agentstvo Voyennykh Novostey 28 May 01).
- Deployed at Kant Airbase in
Kyrghizstan. "The forces will include five SU-27 interceptors,
five SU-25 attack planes, two AN-26 Curl and two IL- 76 military
transports, five L-39 trainers, and two MI-8 Hip helicopters, . . . About
700 servicemen and civilian personnel will serve at the base"
