    • В 1973 г.окончил Высшее политическое училище Министерства внутренних дел СССР, 
    • в 1981 г.Военно-политическую академию, 
    • в 2002 г. Финансовую академию при Правительстве Российской Федерации. 
    • Доктор юридических наук, профессор. 

    Работа

    • Имеет классный чин государственного советника юстиции Российской Федерации. 
    • Воинское звание - генерал-полковник. 

      • С 1989 по 1993 гг. являлся народным депутатом РСФСР, председателем Комитета Верховного Совета Российской Федерации по вопросам обороны и безопасности. 
    • С 1993 по 1998 гг. занимал высокие государственные посты: первый заместитель Министра безопасности, директор Федеральной службы контрразведки, директор Федеральной службы безопасности, начальник Административного департамента Аппарата Правительства, Министр юстиции, Министр внутренних дел. 
    • В 1999 г. занимал посты Первого заместителя Председателя Правительства

      • Российской Федерации - Министра внутренних дел, Председателя
      Правительства Российской Федерации.
    • После избрания в декабре 1999 г. депутатом Государственной Думы

      • Федерального Собрания Российской Федерации возглавлял Комиссию по
      борьбе с коррупцией.
    • 19 апреля 2000 года С. В. Степашин назначен Государственной Думой

      • Федерального Собрания на должность Председателя Счетной палаты Российской Федерации.
    • Награжден орденом "За заслуги перед Отечеством" III степени, орденом Мужества, медалями.

    • USSR Internal Affairs Ministry's Higher Political School (1973), 
    • Lenin Military-Political Academy (1981).

      • Career:

    • "Prior to being elected People's Deputy, served in the MVD troops.  Taught at the Leningrad Ministry of Internal Affairs Institute.  In 1987-1990 together with the cadets operated in the "hot spots" (Karabakh, Fergana, Sumgait, Sukhumi). Commandant of a district in Baku. 
    • In 1990 Deputy Chief of the Political History Department at the USSR Internal Affairs Ministry's Higher Political School (Leningrad).  Combined his duties with delivering lectures and giving exams. 
    • In 1990 the cadets nominated him as candidate for People's Deputy.  From 1990 to 1993, People's Deputy of the Russian Federation (member of the Left Center -- Cooperation faction and the Army Reform group). 
    • Quit the CPSU on 19 August 1991. 
    • From 1991 to 1993, Chairman of the Russian Federation Supreme Soviet's Defense and Security Committee. 
    • After August 1991 headed a State Commission investigating KGB activities.  When the Commission finished its work, appointed Deputy General Director of the Federal Security Agency -- Head of the Leningrad City and Oblast' Directorate. 
    • When the Russian Security Ministry was created, became Deputy Minister of Security. 
    • In September 1991 promoted to Major-General, and a year later to Lieutenant-General.  For nine months combined his work in the Supreme Soviet committee with duties in the Russian Ministry of Security. 
    • In September 1992 attempted to resign from the Committee, but the Supreme Soviet voted to ask President Yel'tsin to assign Stepashin to work in the Supreme Soviet, relieving him of his duties as Deputy Minister and Head of a Security Ministry Directorate.     • First Deputy Minister of Security until abolition of that agency (Rossiyskiye Vesti 28 Sep 93 p 1). (Nezavisimaya Gazeta 11 Jan 94 pp 1, 3). 
    • First Deputy Director of FSK (Krasnaya Zvezda 11 Jan 94 p 1). (Trud 11 Jan 94 pp 1-2). 
    • Appointed to RF Security Council by Yel'tsin (ITAR-TASS 0848 GMT 18 Mar 94). 
    • Chief of Federal Security Service (Krasnaya Zvezda 11 Jan 94 p 1). (Segodnya 14 Apr 95 p 2). 
    • Chief of the Administrative Agencies Department of the Council of Ministers’ Secretariat, Appointed 8 Nov 1995, (Moskovskiy Komsomolets 10 Nov 95 p 1).  (Krasnaya Zvezda 11 Jan 97 pp 1, 2). 
    • In 1997 appointed Minister of Justice by Chernomyrdin.

      • Was removed from office by president Yeltsin on 9 Aug 1999.
