Russia's new nuclear-powered submarine Gepard was built at
the Northern Engineering Works (Sevmash) in
Severodvinsk. "This is the first nuclear submarine
to be built at Sevmash in three years. According to official figures, the
yard used to launch five or six nuclear-powered submarines a year. In the
61 years of its existence Sevmash has made 170 submarines, 135 of them
nuclear. Gepard is a third-generation multirole submarine. Its keel
was laid back in 1992. It is of a class that is regarded as the quietest
of all Russian-made submarines. According to information in the public
domain, Gepard displaces up to 12,770 tonnes, has a top speed of 33 knots
and a working depth of 520 metres" (ITAR-TASS, 15 May 01).

[". . . has drafted technical documents for the export variant
of the Korsar guard-ship. developed by the Zelenodolsk projecting
and design bureau, located in the Tatarstan autonomous republic, on the
basis of the Neustrashimy guard-ship (Project 11540). The Neustrashimy
(fearless) was commissioned by the Navy in 1993 and confirmed its high
specifications in action. The Korsar (Project 11541) is intended for search
and elimination of the enemy's surface ships and submarines, accomplishment
of convoy missions and patrolling operations in the sea. It is powered
by two sustainer gas-turbine engines with the capacity of 9,000hp each
and two afterburner engines with the capacity of 19,500hp each, which allows
the vessel to hit the speed of up to 30 knots. The guard-ship is to be
fitted with the Sigma-E combat information and control system. Its main
weapon will be Uran or Yakhont anti-ship cruise missiles that can hit targets
at ranges of up to 130km. The artillery includes the 10mm A-190E universal
shipborne missile and artillery system with the rate of fire of 80 rounds
per minute. The Korsar will be protected from aerial assault by the Kashtan
air defence missile and artillery system that hits targets at ranges of
up to 8km. Anti-submarine weapons include six torpedo tubes for firing
missile torpedoes and SET-65E and 53-65KE torpedoes, as well as the RBU-6000
12-barrel jet projector with gravitation depth bombs. The vessel also carries
an anti-submarine helicopter, systems of electronic warfare and passive
jamming, a laser emission detection set and a new-generation DP-65 anti-airborne
grenade launcher" (Agentstvo Voyennykh Novostey 20 Jun 01).]
