Chiayi Air Base

As of the late 1990s, the longest runway at Chiayi was reportedly 10,006 feet long. With the consent of the air force, the Chiayi Airport Office was established on 19 May 1976, providing Taipei/Chiayi flight route for three return flights each week. In those days, the station is a mere visitor room of some twenty plus pings borrowed from the air force base, serving both as office and waiting area. However, as the passenger volume grew, the old facility could no longer accommodate the needs, further negotiation with the air force base results in one wooden warehouse which was duly remodeled to alleviate the problem for the time being. The construction of the aviation building commenced on 16 July 1977 and completed by 18 December 1977. After the acceptance inspection, the building was formally launched on New Year's Day 1978, setting the station on track. On 1 January 1993, the station as formally upgraded to an auxiliary station, and due to the rapid growth of transport volume, elevated to Class C station on 1 November 1997.
