• Senator Feinstein Introduces Legislation to Close Detention Facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, April 30. "Guantanamo Bay has become a lightning rod for international condemnation," Senator Feinstein said. "This has greatly damaged the nation’s credibility around the world. Rather than make the United States safer, the image projected by this facility puts us at greater risk. The time has come to close it down."
• Government Keeps a Secret After Studying Spy Agencies by Scott Shane, New York Times, April 26. "Concerned about the growing dependence of the nation’s spy agencies on private contractors, top intelligence officials have spent months determining just how many contractors work at the C.I.A., D.I.A., F.B.I., N.S.A. and the rest of the spook alphabet soup. Now they have an answer. But they cannot reveal it, they say, because America’s enemies might be listening."
• Wal-Mart recruits intelligence officers by Marcus Kabel, Associated Press, April 24. "Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has been recruiting former military and government intelligence officers for a branch of its global security office aimed at identifying threats to the world's largest retailer, including from 'suspect individuals and groups'."
• Bush Administration Proposes Expansion of Surveillance Law by Jeff Bliss, Bloomberg.com, April 13. "The Bush administration proposed legislation today that would expand potential surveillance targets to include people in the U.S. suspected of possessing significant information on terrorist or enemy government plots."
• Proposed Changes to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, fact sheet from the Department of Justice and the Office of Director of National Intelligence, April 13. "Today, following over a year of coordinated effort among the Intelligence Community and the Department of Justice a bill is being submitted to Congress to request long overdue changes to FISA."
• Statement of Administration Policy on the FY 2007 Intelligence Authorization Act, April 12. "If S. 372 were presented to the President, his senior advisers would recommend that he veto the bill."
• Assignment of Functions Relating to the Information Sharing Environment, White House memorandum for the Director of National Intelligence, April 10.
• CIA Bans Book on Chinese Nuclear Weapons, United Press International, April 5. "A federal court sided with the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency to block a former employee from publishing a book about China's nuclear weapons."
• Levin Releases Newly Declassified Pentagon Inspector General Report on Intelligence Assessment Activities of the Office of Under Secretary of Defense Doug Feith, news release, April 5.
