DATE=10/8/1999 TYPE=CORRESPONDENT REPORT TITLE=EMBASSY TERROR ARREST / U-S (L-ONLY) NUMBER=2-254822 BYLINE=ELAINE JOHANSON DATELINE=NEW YORK CONTENT= VOICED AT: INTRO: Another man arrested in connection with last year's attacks on U-S embassies in Tanzania and Kenya -- bombings that killed 224 people -- was arraigned in a U-S federal court in New York today (Friday). V-O-A correspondent Elaine Johanson reports: TEXT: Twenty-six-year-old Khalfan Khamis Mohamed, a citizen of Tanzania, has been charged specifically with actions leading directly to the bombing of the U-S embassy in Dar Es Salaam. He is said to have rented a house used as a base of operations and bomb- factory for the atack in Tanzania. He is also charged with purchasing a white utility vehicle allegedly used by the conspirators as they were hatching [devising] the plot. Khalfan Khamis Mohamed was apprehended by police in Cape Town, South Africa, where he was living under an assumed name. He was turned over to U-S law- enforcement officials and arrived in New York late Thursday. He pleaded "not guilty" in a court appearance Friday. Khalfan Khamis Mohamed is the first to be captured of five people indicted in New York last June in connection with the bombings. U-S Attorney Mary Jo White says the arrest should be a stark reminder to the others that their turn will come: /// WHITE ACT /// The F-B-I [Federal Bureau of Investigation], New York City Police Department Joint Terrorist Task Force and law-enforcement authorities literally around the world will not stop investigating, searching, capturing and prosecuting until all responsible are brought to justice. /// END ACT /// Seventeen people have been indicted for the embassy bombings. Nine are in custody -- six in New York, three in London. The remaining eight are fugitives, with a five-million-dollar bounty on their heads. All have been linked to a terrorist network run by Osama bin Laden, the alleged mastermind of a plot to kill U-S nationals, who is believed to be hiding in Afghanistan. A trial has been set for September fifth in the year 2000. U-S law enforcement officials ideally would like to have all 17 defendants together in the courtroom.
