DATE=8/10/98 TYPE=CORRESPONDENT REPORT NUMBER=2-236844 TITLE=CASTRO PLOT BYLINE=SCOTT ANGER DATELINE=MIAMI CONTENT= VOICED AT: INTRO: THE "MIAMI HERALD" NEWSPAPER IS REPORTING A PLOT TO KILL CUBAN PRESIDENT FIDEL CASTRO NEXT WEEK HAS BEEN BROKEN UP. AS SCOTT ANGER REPORTS, THE NEWSPAPER SAID SUNDAY THE PLOT WAS MASTERMINDED BY A CUBAN EXILE ACCUSED OF A DOZEN BOMBINGS IN HAVANA LAST YEAR. TEXT: THE "MIAMI HERALD" REPORTS ANTI-CASTRO MILITANT, LUIS POSADA CARRILES AND THREE CUBAN EXILES MET LAST MONTH TO DISCUSS SMUGGLING GUNS AND EXPLOSIVES INTO THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. THE REPORT SAYS A HIT TEAM WAS TO ARRIVE IN SANTO DOMINGO TO KILL THE CUBAN PRESIDENT AT A SUMMIT OF CARIBBEAN LEADERS. THE PAPER SAYS A TIP TO THE F-B-I RESULTED IN THE SEARCH OF A MIAMI WAREHOUSE, FRIGHTENING THE WOULD-BE PLOTTERS INTO DROPPING THEIR PLANS. OBSERVERS ARE SKEPTICAL OF THE REPORT, BECAUSE IN A RECENT "NEW YORK TIMES" STORY, MR. POSADA CLAIMED HE RECEIVED FUNDING FROM WEALTHY EXILES IN MIAMI FOR OPERATIONS AGAINST THE CUBAN GOVERNMENT. LAST WEEK, MR. POSADA RECANTED AND SAID HE LIED TO THE "TIMES" TO PROTECT FINANCIAL BACKERS IN THE UNITED STATES. THE MIAMI NEWSPAPER'S REPORT IS BASED ON UN-NAMED LAW ENFORCEMENT SOURCES AND INTERVIEWS WITH EXILES. (SIGNED) NEB/SA/RAE 10-Aug-98 2:30 PM EDT (1830 UTC) NNNN Source: Voice of America .
