(Possibility of random acts of anti-American violence) (240) Washington -- The State Department issued a worldwide travel caution August 7 over the bombings that occurred earlier that day at the U.S. embassies in Tanzania and Kenya. "While we know of no specific threats to U.S. citizens or interests overseas in relation to the present situation in East Africa," the State Department said, "we cannot discount the possibility of random acts of anti-American violence." Following is the State Department text: (begin text) PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE Office of the Spokesman WORLDWIDE CAUTION - EAST AFRICA BOMBINGS August 7, 1998 Bombings occurred at the U.S. embassies in Tanzania and Kenya on August 7, 1998. While we know of no specific threats to U.S. citizens or interests overseas in relation to the present situation in East Africa, we cannot discount the possibility of random acts of anti-American violence. U.S. diplomatic posts worldwide are taking appropriate security precautions. U.S. citizens planning to travel abroad should consult the Department of State's Public Announcements, Travel Warnings, Consular Information Sheets, and regional travel brochures, and refer to the Department's advisories on security awareness overseas.
