SEN. SHELBY'S RECENT COMMENTS REGARDING POSSIBLE USE OF COVERT ACTION TO REMOVE SADDAM HUSSEIN
WASHINGTON, D. C. ---
Sen. Shelby, Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said, "I remain very dubious of Saddam Hussein's willingness to uphold his end of this agreement. While I am hopeful that he will, if he does not, we must use any and all means available to remove him from power. I believe Saddam will continue to represent a threat to not only his own people, but to the world as long as he remains in power.
While a realistic diplomatic solution to the current crisis is the most desirable end to this conflict, the agreement announced this week was brokered by the U. N.---another example of the U. S. abrogating its foreign policy responsibilities.
Frankly, there is no reason to believe that Saddam will ever comply with the United Nations weapons monitoring regime and give up his ability to produce weapons of mass destruction. In fact, Saddam did not even bother to sign the U. N. agreement -- he had his Deputy Prime Minister, Tariq Aziz, sign it. I'm afraid that fact may represent Saddam's continued unwillingness to honor his international commitments."
