TITLE:PETER BURLEIGH NAMED AMBASSADOR TO SRI LANKA, MALDIVES

Washington -- President Clinton announced on April 21 his intention to

nominate A. Peter Burleigh, a career member of the Senior Foreign

Service, as Ambassador to the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri

Lanka and to the Republic of Maldives.



Following is the text of the White House announcement:

The President today announced his intention to nominate A. Peter

Burleigh of California, a Career Member of the Senior Foreign Service

and Class of Minister-Counselor, as Ambassador to the Democratic

Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka as well as to the Republic of

Maldives.



Mr. Burleigh has been a Foreign Service Officer since 1967. He has

served in India, Nepal, Bahrain, as well as Sri Lanka and in several

positions in the State Department in Washington. Most recently he was

Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Personnel; Coordinator for

Counter-Terrorism; Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for

Intelligence and Research; and Deputy Assistant Secretary for Near

Eastern and South Asian Affairs.



Mr. Burleigh was born March 7, 1942, in Los Angeles where he attended

public schools, graduating from Hollywood High School in 1959. He

attended Colgate University, Hamilton, N.Y., earning an AB degree in

1963. He was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Nepal from 1963 to 1965;

studied and was a teaching assistant at the University of Pennsylvania

from 1965 to 1966; and returned to Nepal as a Fulbright Scholar from

1966 to 1967, before joining the Foreign Service. He speaks, reads and

writes Sinhalese, the national language of Sri Lanka -- as well as

several other languages. He has been the recipient of two Presidential

Rank Awards. Mr. Burleigh resides in Washington, D.C.
