Joseph Kruzel is deputy assistant secretary of defense for European and NATO policy. Prior to assuming this position in 1993, Mr. Kruzel was actively involved in U.S. defense policy both as an academic and a practitioner. A distinguished graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy Class of 1967, Mr. Kruzel served on active duty as an intelligence officer in Vietnam and as current intelligence briefing officer for the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He later served as a member of the U.S. Delegation to the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT I). In recognition of his contribution to the SALT I negotiations, Mr. Kruzel was presented the Distinguished Service Award. Mr. Kruzel's other government service includes assignments as special assistant to Secretary of Defense Harold Brown and legislative assistant for defense and foreign policy for Senator Edward M. Kennedy. He has also done consulting work for the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency, the Department of Defense, and the National Security Council. Mr. Kruzel received his M.P.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard University. He has taught at Harvard, Duke, and Ohio State University. Mr. Kruzel also directed the Program on International Security and Military Affairs of the Mershon Center at Ohio State. His numerous publications on defense policy and arms control include the continuing publication of the "American Defense Annual," a yearly review and assessment of the major issues in U.S. security policy. Mr. Kruzel is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the International Institute for Strategic Studies, and the International Studies Association. He resides in McLean, Virginia, with his wife Gail and two children, Sarah and John. NNNN 1 .
