Washington -- The White House July 27 released the following announcement:

President Clinton July 27 announced his intention to nominate David George

Newton, of Virginia, a Career Member of the Senior Foreign Service, as

Ambassador to the Republic of Yemen.



Mr. Newton entered the Foreign Service in 1962 and, after training in

Washington, served as Vice Consul, American Consulate General, Zurich,

Switzerland, until 1964.  After two years of training in Arabic language

and area studies at the Foreign Service Institute branch in Beirut,

Lebanon, he was posted in 1966 to the American Embassy Branch in Sanaa,

Yemen, as Economic Officer.  In 1967 he returned to the Department of State

as Economic Officer for the Office of Arabian Peninsula Affairs.



For three years he served as Political Officer, American Embassy, Jeddah,

Saudi Arabia, before returning to Yemen to serve as Deputy Chief of Mission

of the American Embassy in Sanaa until 1975.  From 1975 to 1977, he was

Near East Division Chief in the Bureau of Intelligence and Research.



Mr. Newton subsequently served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the American

Embassy, Damascus, Syria, from 1978 to 1981 and as Political Counselor at

the American Embassy, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, from 1981 to 1984.  In June

1984 he became Principal Officer of the U.S. Interests Section of the

Belgian Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq.



Following resumption of diplomatic relations with Iraq in November 1984, he

was appointed Ambassador, serving in Baghdad until 1988.  In that year he

became Director of the Office for Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan in the

Department of State.  From 1990 to 1993 he served as International Affairs

Advisor and Chairman of the Department of National Security Policy at the

National War College in Washington, D.C.  He is currently serving as Senior

Inspector (Team Leader) with the Office of Inspections, Office of the

Inspector General, Department of State.



Mr. Newton was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on November 13, 1935.  He is a

graduate of Harvard College and the University of Michigan.  He served in

the United States Army in Germany from 1958 to 1961.  He is married to the

former Christa Rathay; they have two children, Mark (28) and Lesley (23).

His foreign languages are Arabic, German and French.
