WASHINGTON -- President Bill Clinton announced June 15 his intention to

nominate E. Michael Southwick to be the new U.S. ambassador to the Republic

of Uganda.



Southwick, a career foreign service officer, currently serves as deputy

chief of mission at the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi.  During his career, he has

also served as deputy chief of mission at U.S. embassies in Niger and

Burundi.



Other overseas assignments have included tours in Rwanda, Nepal, and

Switzerland.



During tours of duty in Washington, Southwick has held a variety of

positions, most recently as executive director of the Bureau of

Intelligence and Research at the U.S. Department of State.



Both the ambassador-designate and Susan, his wife, hold bachelor's degrees

from Stanford University and both speak French.



Southwick was born on January 12, 1945, in Willits, California.

The couple have three children.  Edward, the eldest, recently graduated from

California State University at Sacramento; Andrew, the middle child, is a

freshman at the University of California at Santa Barbara; and Katherine,

the youngest, is a high school student in Nairobi.



If confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Southwick will succeed Ambassador Johnny

Carson.
