WILLIAM CROWE SELECTED AS ENVOY TO BRITAIN

President Clinton has announced his intention to nominate retired Admiral

William Crowe to be ambassador to Britain. Crowe, an early supporter of

Clinton's presidential aspirations, served as chairman of the Joint Chiefs

of Staff from 1985 to 1989. He is chairman of the President's Foreign

Intelligence Advisory Board, counselor at the Center for Strategic and

International Studies in Washington and professor of geopolitics at the

University of Oklahoma.

"Admiral Crowe," Clinton said in a written statement, "has distinguished

himself in four decades of dedicated public service. I am very pleased

that he will continue his service to this nation and that I will be able to

rely on his wise counsel in this very important position" at the U.S.

Embassy in London.

Crowe earned master's and doctoral degrees at Princeton University. He

served as commander of Allied Forces in Southern Europe, U.S. Naval Forces

in Europe, the Pacific Fleet, and the Middle East Force based in Bahrain.
