Washington -- The Senate Select Committee on POW/MIA Affairs will hold
hearings August 4-5 on live-sighting reports of American prisoners-of-war
in Indochina.

Following is the text of the panel's July 30 press release:

U.S. INVESTIGATION OF LIVE-SIGHTING REPORTS FOCUS OF AUGUST 4-5 HEARINGS
Officials responsible for U.S. efforts to examine live-sighting reports
about missing American servicemen will testify at hearings on August 4 and
5.  At issue:

What do Defense Intelligence Agency investigators do when they receive a
1eport that an American has been seen alive in Southeast Asia?  What was
their practice in the past?  When was this practice reformed?

What is the turn-around time between receiving a report and acting upon it?
What was it before policies were changed?

What criteria do investigators use to decide whether a report is serious or
valid?  Which is checked first -- the report, or the source's credibility?

The hearings are set for August 4 and 5 in Room 216 Hart Senate Office
Building.  Each hearing begins at 9:00am.  The witnesses are
representatives of the Defense Intelligence Agency, which was created in
1961.
