Iraq

Al Basrah Mosque, 18 February 1991. Iraqi Demolition.

Saddam Hussein soon lost the ability to shoot down coalition aircraft, but he never abandoned other attempts to blunt the air attack. One tack was to simulate damage to unacceptable targets in hopes that Western public opinion would stop the air offensive. This is the Al Basrah Mosque, its dome neatly sheared off. The nearest bomb crater, made on 30 January, is visible at the top of the photograph, just under the caption. This photograph was shown by the Department of Defense on 19 February 1991.
