Since 1976 DOE has been involved in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, which consists of underground crude oil storage facilities. The storage sites are connected by DOE pipelines to commercial crude oil pipeline networks and marine terminal facilities for drawdown and distribution. The St. James Terminal is located on about 173 acres of land 30 miles southwest of Baton Rouge, on the Mississippi River. It is the only terminal owned by DOE. The terminal facility has two docks where large tankers unload crude oil, and six storage tanks with a total capacity of 2 million barrels. The terminal connects via pipeline to the Bayou Choctaw and Weeks Island storage site.
