Oak Ridge
Y-12 Plant
Built in 1943 as part of the Manhattan Project, the original mission of the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant was to use an electromagnetic process to
separate uranium isotopes. Between World War II and 1993 this mission continued. The role of the Y-12 Plant has evolved into supporting
highly sophisticated manufacturing and development engineering associated with the production and fabrication of nuclear weapons
components.
