FAS Project on Intelligence Reform

5L-X-15/N1-L3 all white 1M1, 3 stages

Mission: 1052-1 -- Date 24 September 1969 -- Frame A 067

The now all white N1 first three stages (1M1) or the flight 6L was sent to the "J" west pad to test what went wrong with the 5L launch. Note the east pad cleanup is continuing.

Resembling a 'Fat Bullet,' as described in the late 1960's and early 1970's, the 3 stage N1 was capped with a small cone on top of its third stage in place of the L-3 (L-1) payload mockup. This is the first of two N1-L3 rollouts not revealed in Russian open literature on the post July 3/4, 1969 launch failure activities. Thanks to Corona, it is now revealed as historical fact.
