Intelligence

497TH INTELLIGENCE GROUP


1. Mission. The 497th Intelligence Group (497 IG), on behalf of the Air Intelligence Agency (AIA), provides specialized information operations services to Headquarters United States Air Force joint, interdepartmental, interagency, and international activities.

2. Command. The Commander, 497 IG, exercises command jurisdiction over assigned personnel, property, and funds and reports to the AIA commander.

3. Responsibilities:

3.1. The 497 IG:

3.1.1. Provides information operations infrastructure and threat support to the weapon systems acquisition process.

3.1.2. Monitors, coordinates, and provides guidance on the United States Air Force acquisition system threat documentation production.

3.1.3. Provides Air Force guidance on modeling and simulation threat scenario development.

3.1.4. Provides Air Force assistance in the development and quality control of intelligence support plans, and the training of intelligence counterpart officers.

3.1.5. Determines eligibility for all collateral access security clearances for all United States Air Force military personnel and civilians. Manages the Presidential Support Program and Automated Security Clearance Approval System for the Air Force. Is the Executive Agent for the Joint Personnel adjudication system.

3.1.6 Provides sensitive compartmented information (SCI) security management oversight for United States Air Force SCI environments and SCI-indoctrinated individuals within the National Capital Region (NCR), to include the offices of the Secretary and Chief of Staff of the Air Force and the Air Staff. Controls and disseminates all SCI documents, materials, and communications transmitted and, or, received by and for United States Air Force NCR customer organizations. Promulgates SCI security education and awareness training program for all United States Air Force personnel in the NCR.

3.1.7. Manages all matters relating to the operational security of Department of Defense Intelligence Information Systems (DODIIS) migrations systems that process SCI and other foreign intelligence. Performs Automated Information System accreditation reviews and certification visits to United States Air Force units worldwide regarding SCI computer security.

3.1.8. Manages physical and TEMPEST security matters as required by the Defense Intelligence Agency, Office of Security and Counterintelligence. Performs staff assistance visits and inspections for United States Air Force units' SCI facilities worldwide.

  1. Represents the United States Air Force in a national, jointly manned collection facility. Manages United States Air Force imagery collection exploitation requirements on national systems to support United States Air Force weapon systems development, information, and combat operations.

3.1.10. Provides administrative communications and computer systems functional requirements, planning, architecture, procurement, dissemination and maintenance systems for the 497 IG, Headquarters United States Air Force, and the National Air Intelligence Center (NAIC) Operating Location IA (OL-IA).

3.1.11. Provides mission support to elements of HQ USAF, and NAIC OL-IA in the functional areas of wartime readiness, resource programming, facilities management, host-tenant support agreements, memorandums of understanding, transportation, and orderly room functions. Provides guidance and assistance on civilian and military personnel matters and manpower and organizational structure.

3.1.12. Provides specialized information operations representation for board and committee memberships, as required by HQ AIA and Headquarters United States Air Force.

3.1.13. Provides Air Force support to approved programs of the Central Intelligence Agency, Defense Intelligence Agency, Defense Mapping Agency, Central Security Service, Defense Information Systems Agency, the White House, and other government agencies.

3.2. United States Air Force Functional Manager. The 497 IG is the United States Air Force functional manager for:

3.2.1. All resolution of mapping, charting, and geodesy (MC&G) issues that include:

3.2.1.1. Validating and defending Air Force requirements for MC&G products and services.

3.2.1.2. Monitoring exploitation of MC&G products and services.

3.2.1.3. Providing technical MC&G support to the Air Staff and the major air commands.

3.2.1.4. Developing, coordinating, and evaluating MC&G products and technology for the United States Air Force to support advanced weapon systems, information operations, and future MC&G needs.

3.2.2. All United States Air Force targeting issues that include:

3.2.2.1. Developing United States Air Force positions on national defense guidance, nuclear weapons employment, strategic targeting planning, and operational effectiveness of weapon systems and munitions.

3.2.2.2. Providing targeting and weaponeering support as the HQ USAF target planning cell during crises and contingencies.

3.2.3. All United States Air Force SCI physical security functions. Determines eligibility for SCI access for all Air Force military personnel, civilians, contractors, and consultants.

3.2.4. All Air Force Intelligence Data Handling Systems (IDHS) which are designed to provide intelligence to operational commanders worldwide. Provides oversight for intelligence automated systems and their interfaces, which are designed, developed, acquired, implemented, tested, integrated, and fielded to support Air Force intelligence and intelligence-related activities.
