Press Release - August 16, 1995

McLean, VA, Aug. 16 -- Director of Central Intelligence John M. Deutch announced today that he has selected Sandra A. Kruzman to serve as the CIA's Associate Deputy Director for Intelligence.

Ms. Kruzman is the first woman to serve in that post, the number two position in the Directorate of Intelligence (DI). The DI evaluates and analyzes intelligence data and prepares a variety of finished intelligence products.

In making the appointment, DCI Deutch said, "I am confident that the Directorate will benefit from her broad and deep experience. The DI will gain from her commitment to people- oriented management and her unassailable personal integrity."

Born on January 25, 1943 in Detroit, Ms. Kruzman received a BA in Economics from the University of Michigan in 1963 and an MA in Economics at the University of Texas in 1965.

She joined CIA in 1966 as an economic analyst and has held a variety of analytical and management positions in the DI. Ms. Kruzman's most recent assignment was Director of the DI's Office of Current Production and Analytic Support, a position she held since April 1994. Prior to that, she served in a number of other senior assignments in the DI, including Director of the Office of Information Resources, Chief of the Collection Requirements and Evaluation Staff, and Deputy Director of the Office of European Analysis.

The Washington, D.C. Junior Chamber of Commerce in 1983 named Ms. Kruzman as a recipient of the Arthur S. Flemming Award, presented annually by the Chamber of Commerce to the 10 most outstanding young men and women in the Federal Service.

Ms. Kruzman will serve as the deputy to Deputy Director for Intelligence John Gannon, who expressed his personal delight in having Ms. Kruzman on his team. In announcing her appointment to the Directorate, Mr. Gannon said, "She's smart on substance, resource, and organizational issues. I look for her to help me in crafting a DI strategic plan and investment strategy that will protect the future of an all- source analytical corps with global outreach and a reputation for excellence."
